First Line Friday: Starting From Scratch

Welcome to First Line Friday,

Starting From Scratch by Kate Lloyd has been on my radar since the author began promoting it on Instagram, so I couldn’t resist ordering a copy when she captioned a picture of it with the news that the paperback was available for $3.50 on Amazon (US).

With a cover blurb from one of my favorite Amish fiction authors, Laura V. Hilton, and praise from @themaryreader on Instagram, this promises to be an enjoyable read.

Here is the description:

An Old Flame Brings a Spark of New Hope

En Alt Maedel—an old maid.

At age twenty-nine, that’s what Eva Lapp considers herself. And who could argue with her? Finding a good Amish husband at her age will be next to impossible. Plus, Eva’s unwarranted bad reputation in Lancaster County precedes her. Maybe living the Englisch life would be better.

Squeezed out of her childhood home by her brother’s boisterous family, Eva finds lodging and a new job managing a small café at a local plant nursery. But the challenge of her new position isn’t enough to distract from her current predicament.

To Eva’s surprise, her first love, Jake Miller, suddenly returns to Lancaster County. Flooded with emotions and filled with questions about Jake’s past, can Eva trust what she’s feeling?

Jake and Eva face many obstacles in their quest for a fresh start in the community, but perhaps with God’s help, they can find the redemption they both desperately need.

And here is the first line (plus a bit more, I think you’ll see why):

Maam peered out my bedroom window as buggy wheels crunched to a halt in the barnyard.

Ach, Evie.” She spoke over her shoulder.  “Reuben and Marta are here.  Two days early.”

I wasn’t packed yet, but I plastered on a smile and said “Wunderbaar,” as if my whole world weren’t being turned upside down.

Curious to read more?  The first chapter is available on Amazon or at katelloyd.com.  Though, at this price, you might be tempted to just order a copy.  I know I was –  my copies (I ordered an extra to share – both my mom and grandma enjoy Amish fiction) are supposed to arrive on Saturday and it will be hard not to start it right away.

Happy Friday!

  1. There’s nothing like finding out a book you’ve been eyeing off is on sale!

I’m featuring ‘Shadow Sister’ by Katherine Scott Jones on my blog today, but right now I’ve just started reading ‘The Raveling’ by Tamara Leigh. At last! I’ve been waiting to find the time to read this one!!

“He had lost a son he had not known he had–providing the child was his.”

    Have a great weekend!

    1. Finally getting to that book you’ve been waiting for might rival it! I have several Tamara Leigh books on my kindle waiting and waiting…

  3. Happy Friday!😊

My first lines come from a book I will be reading shortly, Unleashed by Donna Kauffman.

Emma Lafferty’s life had gone to the dogs. Literally. And to the cats. And the parakeets, goldfish, hamsters, even the occasional potbelly pig. What it and her fledgling pet-sitting service hadn’t gone to was her bank account. Not enough, anyway.

Have a great weekend and happy reading!😊📚💖

  4. Love finding paperbacks on sale! I use my Kindle a ton, but there’s still nothing like holding a book in my hand 🙂

I’m sharing the first line of “A Worthy Rebel” on my blog today. I’ll share the first line of my current read, Sarah Loudin Thomas’s “A Shot at Love,” here: “Fleeta hunkered low, careful not to rattle the crisp fallen leaves all around her.”

  5. I love it when books we love (or hope to love) go on sale.

Over on my blog, I’m sharing the first line from Lynnette Bonner’s High Desert Haven. Here, I’ll share one of my favorite lines from Crossed Out by Christina Coryell (her contribution to the Once Upon A Laugh novella collection):

Kids at yard sales were nearly impossible to corral. Grandmas watching kids at yard sales were like wild mustangs, throwing caution and endless quarters to the wind.

    1. I also love it when an author we’re unfamiliar with, and the library doesn’t carry, has a free first in series e-book! I now have the book prior to High Desert Haven on it’s way to my kindle. 😀

Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend!

  6. Those first few lines pull you in and make you curious enough to continue. Well done! I’m not posting a First Line Friday this week because I simply don’t have time. I just became a great-aunt yesterday and am entertaining family from out of time. Some things are simply more important than reading. This is one of them. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Congratulations! I fully agree with your decision. Becoming a great-aunt is a wonderful occasion and must be celebrated! (I’ll be celebrating for my 8th time soon with my third great-nephew.)

Have a wonderful time with your newly expanded family!

Here, I’m sharing lines from Keira Montclair’s Falling for the Chieftan. It’s her new historical time travel romance.

“Allison Sutton’s feet hit water as she plunged into the murky liquid at the base of the cascading falls.”

    Happy Reading!

  8. Happy Saturday!

Yesterday on my blog, I shared the first lines from Cara Putman’s novel Delayed Justice. Here I will share the first line from the novel I’m currently reading, An Unpresentable Glory by Eleanor Gustafson.

Hope you have an awesome weekend!!! 😀🧡📚

  9. I know I’m late for Friday, so happy Labor Day weekend! My first line is from Under Prairie Skies by Cynthia Roemer.

“The sound of a spry whistle froze Charlotte Stanton in her tracks. She tightened her hold on her bucket of creek water, eyes narrowing.”
