First Line Friday–The Road to Paradise

My nerdy, history loving, born-in-Washington-state heart went pitter patter when I first saw the cover of Karen Barnett’s The Road to Paradise.  Historical fiction set in Washington, at Mount Rainier National Park?  And with a vintage poster style cover?  Yes, please!

This book (that I pre-ordered last year) has been languishing on my bookshelf, continually giving way to review copies, but the second National Parks Novel is set to come out in just a few months, so I intend to read The Road to Paradise before Where the Fire Falls is released in June.  Here’s hoping…and here is the first line:

 “June 1, 1927    Mount Rainier National Park    Ashford, Washington 

The promised view of the mountain peak waited, cloaked in mist like a tissue-wrapped gift ready to be unveiled.“

I love that this series is set in national parks and that the author is a former park ranger. Having a cover blurb from Jane Kirkpatrick isn’t too shabby, either.  And did I mention that cover?!

    I have the first line from Sondra Kraak’s new release, Three Words and a Kiss, on my blog today, but right now I’m going to share the first two lines from my current read, ‘Justice’ by Emily Conrad, which releases on 9 March:

    “Snow floated onto Main Street, each flake large enough to catch the breeze like a parachute. A miniature army, launching a surprise invasion on March first.”

    Today I am showcasing the first line from Michelle Griep’s newest novel, The Innkeeper’s Daughter. I am loving the book. It is a page turner, and the hero is wonderful. I am just starting chapter 18, so I will share the first line from that chapter here:

    “Johanna opened the door to chaos, then stood there, jaw agape.”

  7. The cover is lovely. I lived in the Seattle area for a number years and visited My Rainer many times. I have heard of this series and one I must put on my TBR pile. Today on my blog I am featuring The Witches City series. I have just started NO CURE FOR THE DEAD, Florence Nightingale story CHAPTER 1 September 1853 Some said I must have been possessed by a demon to take on the position as superintendent at the Establishment for Gentlewomen

    1. Sounds like an interesting take on Florence Nightingale!
      I lived most of my life in the Seattle area and never visited Mt. Rainier – I need to fix that (and take a bit less time to visit Mt. Hood now that I live in Oregon).

  12. The cover is very cool! I’m sharing from a title set in WWII on my blog today, Firing Line by Mike Hollow. It’s a murder mystery set in London during the Blitz, and the cover is very 1940s London.
