Excerpt

When pain carved lines in his forehead, Alli smoothed a finger over them, all the while struggling to quell the plethora of emotions coursing through her. If anything happened to Jake—

She squeezed her eyes shut, ignoring the sweat dripping from her brow. What was she thinking? Yes, of course she wanted him to be okay, but where had that sudden desperation come from? After all, until a few weeks ago, they hadn’t spoken but a few words to each other in more than a decade and a half. So why was she having all these discombobulated emotions now?

Looking at him again, she trailed her fingers down his cheek, allowing her palm to linger on his chin. Because this was Jake. The boy who’d stolen her heart long ago. And the man who was dangerously close to doing it again.

The sound of tires racing up the gravel drive had the dogs barking again. Beast, anyway.

Standing, Alli dragged an arm across her brow and gave herself a stern shake as her father’s truck came into view, a cloud of dust in its wake.

And when he brought the vehicle to a stop, she heard sirens in the distance.

The cavalry had arrived. And Alli would do well to stay in the moment instead of allowing her mind to wander places it had no business going.
