EXCERPT

     Logan stepped closer. Even in sleep, Charlotte’s forehead was creased, and the hand wearing her mother’s ring cupped protectively over her rounded tummy. In the corners of hereyes he saw new, worried grooves—and streaks of dried tears.

     The last words he’d ever spoken to her echoed in his mind.

     Don’t come crying to me.

     Well, she hadn’t. But here he was.

     He stood silently, watching her sleep. He’d only intended to lay eyes on her—to scope out the situation as best be could. Then he’d planned on finding a cheap hotel someplace and coming back to the hospital first thing in the morning.

     But now, looking at Charlotte lying alone in this sterile room, he tossed that plan out the window. Moving soundlessly, he picked up a metal chair, set it just inside the door and settled down to wait out the night.
