Don’t Close Your Eyes: A Silly Bedtime Story by Bob Hostetler, Illustrated by Mark Chambers (board book review)

dontcloseyoureyes_tommynelsonBedtime books with a sweet or cute story and adorable, cuddly animals hold such an appeal.  Add in a story that is also silly, and this is sure to be a hit, with the reverse psychology potential of the “don’t close your eyes” refrain.

As the illustrations move through the countryside, the reader encounters different animal families, from owls, to squirrels, to foxes and horses. All with a variety of widely awake and very sleepy eyes accompanying the text, which continually talks about all that is going on along with mentioning sleepiness but always returning to the refrain of the title.

This is a sweet, silly, funny, and adorable book with descriptions of lullabies being chirped, busy bees lying down to rest, squirrel children having said their prayers, and plenty of opportunity for expressively reading aloud. The two lines per page are also perfectly timed for a quick read for less patient children.  Among my personal favorites is a page that says, with perfectly matched and adorably rendered illustrations, “The squirrels are fully squirreled away.  The gophers, gophers out.”

With a lightly padded cover and thick pages that have a small amount of give, the story begins and ends on pages glued to the inside front and back covers.  No wasting time with extra pages here!  The physical book, the story, and the illustrations combined live up to the high standard I’ve come to expect from Tommy Nelson board books, and I will happily recommend it.  Whether they fight sleep or can’t wait for bedtime, the young ones in your life are sure to enjoy this bedtime book.  A great gift for showers or just because, and definitely great-aunt approved!
