As the sun slowly sinks in the darkening sky, little farm animals of all shapes and sizes snuggle with their mamas for a good night’s sleep.  And Mama cuddles Baby in the rocking chair before whispering a sweet good night.  With expressive verse and warm illustrations, this board book is perfect for bedtime reading. (book cover)

An adorable board book that will be perfect for bedtime cuddles and read-aloud, the pictures are adorable and the words are soothing.  A bunny, a mare, and a hen, then mouse, ewe, fox, owl and human moms all cuddle with their babies in their respective homes, accompanying the brief but descriptive text.

If (like two of my now-grown nieces) your children want the same books read over and over again (even though they have them memorized), this sweet and simple story should remain pleasant after many repetitions.  For variety, the art has details that could lead to conversations (counting, colors, types of food and homes, etc.), help a child to be the one to “read” a story in the pages, or for an adult reader to provide additional description when going through the story “just one more time.”

Beyond the vibrant art, with all of it’s nice little touches such as all of the animals being represented in the human nursery, and the cozy story, the physical book is quite nice as well.  Larger than I expect for a board book (8″ square), with a lightly padded front cover and rounded corners on the interior “pages.”  It feels sturdy, as if it might last quite a while, even with small ones who are as hard on books as my great-nieces and nephew.

The only faults I can find with this bedtime book are that one rhyme is a tad bit forced (warren/morn) and the book is completely mom-centric, not a dad in sight unless one of the horses on the first pages is a stallion and one or more of the sheep a ram.  Minor things, in the context of a bedtime book.

5/5 stars, highly recommended for reading aloud and a perfect addition to bed-time routines. Becoming a great-aunt has reinvigorated my interest in picture books, so I was very pleased to be included in the Worthy’s blog tour for this book from their WorthKids/Ideals imprint.
